Chapter 36

Deep Dive

Everything was in readiness for filming the deep freedive. I was sitting on a bench on the Omega’s deck, trying hard to stay calm amid the semi-controlled chaos around me. Christophe had rigged a curtain around the bench, so I’d have a little bit of privacy during my pre-dive preparations. The dive was scheduled to commence in a few minutes.

Liam, Doc, and Alec were standing next to their dive gear and their video equipment compulsively checking and double-checking everything. The safety divers stood next to them, chatting quietly, and appearing relaxed and at ease. Vincent was filming the commotion on deck, and Maddy was fluttering around him trying to make sure he caught everything of interest.

Gus and Christophe were next to the winch that raised and lowered the weighted line I would follow during the dive. The large bottom weight had several tags loosely attached to it. I was supposed to grab one when I reached one hundred meters and bring it to the surface with me as proof that I’d made the dive to the correct depth.

I was trying hard to stay calm and ignore the activity, but I had to admit I was nervous. I tilted my head back and closed my eyes, breathing deeply and trying to immerse myself in meditation, the way Christophe had showed me. The hot sun felt scorching on my shoulders. My heart rate slowed as I sought the calm center of my being, but I jumped a mile when I felt a hand touch my arm.

I opened one eye. “Alec. Go away and leave me alone.”

He smiled his most angelic smile, so I knew he was up to something. He held one of RIO’s stainless-steel insulated mugs in his hand. “I brought you some water. Nobody else seems to be looking out for you, and it’s so hot I thought you might want something to drink before you dive.”

He held the mug out to me, and suddenly, he was right. I was hot and thirsty. The mug looked so inviting, slightly frosty with condensation. “Thank you,” I said, reaching for the cool drink. But I wasn’t dumb enough to accept anything from him without checking it out first.

I popped the plastic cover off the mug and looked inside. Nothing but water and ice cubes. I drained the fluid, then handed him back the mug. “Thanks.”

“Good luck on the dive.” He smiled and walked away.

I went back to meditating, feeling even more relaxed now that I’d had something to drink.

A few minutes later, I heard the winch creak into action as it lowered the weight. Then came two splashes when Liam and his buddy did their entries. Another pair of splashes meant Doc and her buddy were in. Alec would be going in within another minute or so.

I was breathing deeply, trying to saturate my body with oxygen, when Christophe came to fetch me for the dive. He offered a hand to help me up. “You’re going to kill it,” he whispered in my ear before leading me to the Omega’s stern.
